Chinese Americans in Southwest Michigan often experience isolation and displacement due to having more sparse communities than other regions of the US, such as San Francisco or NYC. However, can Chinese Americans reconnect with their culture, community, and identity through methods of narrative and zine-making?

I come from a small Chinese immigrant family which only consists of my mother and I. Unlike other Chinese families in our local community, traditional festivals were not celebrated with lavish suppers or gatherings. This is partially because we were not active participants of large festive gatherings, but also due to the lower Chinese American population around Kalamazoo, Michigan. This contributes towards the feeling of disconnection. For this thesis project, I want to explore the intersection between Chinese American identity, diaspora, and collective memories. I want to use the topic of traditional festivals and the format of zines as vessels to drive the personal narratives forward....

As a team of 10 designers, plan, design, craft, and execute a graphic design BFA exhition that embodies the following statement:

“Apex: the pinnacle of our creativity, solution-oriented thinking, and visual finesse. Like letter strokes converging in typography, we have collaborated with each other in pursuit of impactful design. From this high vantage point, we celebrate how far we have come and contemplate how far we will go. The path ahead holds many unknowns; but we do know that the journey is beautiful, just like this Apex we share together.”

In January 2023, myself and 9 other graphic design BFA seniors started the concept development of Apex. I focused on 2D aspects of the exhibition, including exhibition identity, inviation and poster during the earlier phase of design. As the exhibition developed further, the teams were broken down into more specialized areas of focuses. I worked adjacently with my colleagues Rafael Lopez and Nikki Ambs in photography and social media teams respectively. As the social media team, Nikki Ambs and I strategized, created and curated the content the Instagram for Apex. The main idea behind the Instagram account is to create a digital archive for this exhibition while capturing the essence of the exhibition experience. Chronical content roll-out was planned around the key points of before, during and after the exhibition. I directed and produced many video/motion graphic contents for release at these various key points, such as the teaser video which revealed the final identity of Apex, timelapse of gallery installation, etc.

Map of Mountians and Seas is also
an attempt to subvert the sterotypical
view on traditional literature.

Visual Taxonomy is a classification and categlorization approach to display visual information. In Map of Mountains, Seas & Strange Tales, I used the taxonomic model to visually inform the audience about the Chinese mythic text Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shan Hai Jing 山海经). Classic of Mountains and Seas is a collection of mythological accounts of geography, medicine, beastiary, and folk lores.
I began this project by conducting the research on the text. After reading the Classic and examining exsiting materials that deconstruct its content, the decision was made to build the information on the framework of a map. The Classic is broken down by geological chapters with subsequent entries of creatures and lore. I organized the qualitative information (entries of beastiary lore) by plotting them on the map of China in their distinct regions as described by the text.

The map is also an attempt to subvert the sterotypical view on traditional literature To achieve this goal, I experimented with a bold color scheme to contrast the otherwise antique content of an ancient text. For this map, I also used clean lines and gradient for the stylistic direction, which collaborated organically with Hu Wenhuan’s original illustrations.

Ming Dynasty artist

Hu Wenhuan, who rendered many figures from Classic of Mountains and Seas. These illustrations have since entered public domain, and are free to use from Wikipedia Commons.

Jerico Kalmazoo is a co-work space in the Edison neighoborhood in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and it is home to many artist, designer and maker studios. Jerico Faire is an event hosted by Jerico that invites an array of local artists and makers to vend at their complex. Jerico Faire launched a poster contest for its fifth season in July 2022. This poster design was initially an entry to the contest. After named the 1st place design, I continued to develop the 11x17in , 3x5in poster designs, as well as social media assets for their Instagram and Facebook posts. In an addition, I offered to make a Reel animation for Jerico’s Instagram to further engage with their audience.

Key visual for Jerico Faire Season Five consists of an isometric reimagination of Jerico’s iconic complex at

1501 Fulford St, Kalamazoo, MI. The cubic render of the Jerico complex is also a symbolic representation to the exchange and commerce of hand-crafted goods at Jerico Faire, as it closely resembles a gift box. Additionally, the color scheme and the free floating elements suggests the atomsphere of an artist-driven faire and seasonal blessings.

Final podcast identity and project composite

WMU Design Grind is a podcast show on Spotify produced by the 2021-2022 AIGA WMU student chapter. With exclusive interviews, WMU Design Grind provides a firsthand look at the lives of design students and their work.
The podcast serves as a platform to share the voices of students and professors at the Graphic Design BFA program.
The identity of the podcast show evolved much from its inception in winter 2021. The original concept mimicked the outline of the Richmond Center (home of the graphic design program). Ultimately the design direction went for a less site-specific, type-based identity. The final identity is garnished with sparks between “DESIGN” and “GRIND” to reflect on the concept of “grinding gears”. A cursor with a motion trail is added to the background to symbolize the routine of design.

I want to use the topic of traditional festivals and the format of zines as vessels to drive the personal narratives forward.
